Online role-playing games like the World of Warcraft (WoW) blend fantasy elements with gameplay mechanics that reward skill and precision. Some of the most experienced and skilled WoW players belong to groups called guilds that seek out the game’s most difficult challenges. This project seeks to understand who these elite players are and how they fit into the culture of WoW players and in the culture of online role-playing gamers more generally. This web page details some of the shared traditions of top players and their place within the game’s shared history. Finally, it describes how these players gain social benefits from a role-playing game despite not typically participating in immersive role-playing.
